TEACHING & TRAINING

Outside the university setting, I consult as a trainer and facilitator for civilian and military practitioners working in the fields of humanitarianism, human rights, peacekeeping and multi-mandate interventions. Within academia, I have designed and delivered academic courses and served as a supervisor and examiner at the undergraduate and graduate levels for LLB, JD, LLM and MSc students in Canada and the UK.
Training and Facilitation Practice
Over the past decade, I have trained a diverse range of practitioners internationally. My training and facilitation experience includes:
  • Peacebuilding Training of Trainers (TOT), BRAC University Centre for Peace and Justice (Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh)
  • Participatory Action Research for Youth, Rohingya Youth for Legal Action (Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh)
  • Training on International Humanitarian Law, Human Rights Law, Refugee Law & Disaster Law, EU Aid Volunteers Training Program (Schlaining Peace Castle, Austria; Ede, Netherlands)
  • Training on IHL, gender and children in war, NATO Multi-National Civil-Military Relations Group (Italy)
  • Training on International Law & Humanitarian Practice, Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Center (Ghana)

My areas of training expertise are as follows:
  • International Humanitarian Law (IHL)
  • International Human Rights Law (IHRL)
  • Refugee and Internally Displaced Persons Law
  • Disaster Law
  • Practice and Ethics of Humanitarian Assistance
  • International Development
  • Peacebuilding & Conflict Transformation
  • Civil-Military Relations
  • Children and Armed Conflict
  • Protection of Civilians
  • Project Management, Monitoring and Evaluation
  • Leadership, Communication and Coordination
  • Empathy and Emotional Intelligence

In my facilitation practice I employ an eclectic methodology to offer clients a holistic and bespoke training package suited to individual and group needs. My facilitation work is inspired by Paolo Friere's emancipatory approach to adult education. I position concepts of humanity, dignity and aspiration at the centre of my work, and I often draw on the insights of the People-First Impact Method (P-FIM); this training tool engages affected communities in shaping interventions carried out in their name.  I also employ experiential learning models such as role-plays and simulations, guiding practitioners through a reflexive inquiry into their everyday practices.

My training fees are assessed on a sliding scale. Where possible, I offer low-cost trainings for grassroots and community-based organizations.

Academic Teaching
I have been teaching regularly in academic settings since 2015. My teaching experience includes:

  • Curator, Advanced Summer School in Human Rights and Conflict, EUI/Academy of European Law (2021)
  • Convenor, LLM course in Human Rights and Conflict Resolution, Edinburgh Law School (2019-2020)
  • LLM Dissertation Supervision, LLM in International Law, Edinburgh Law School/University of Glasgow (2019-)
  • Chief Examiner, Complex Emergencies and Humanitarian Response, LSE/University of London (2016-2018)
  • Visiting Professor, Re-Imagining Int'l Humanitarian Law, University of Western Ontario Faculty of Law (2017)
  • Teaching Fellow, LLB course in Criminal Law, School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) (2016-2017)
  • Graduate Teaching Assistant & Dissertation Advisor, MSc course in Managing Humanitarianism, LSE (2015-2016)

I have received formal training in small-group learning and pedagogy. I hold a Post-Graduate Certificate in Higher Education (PG Cert - HE) and I am an Associate Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy. I have been nominated for teaching awards by my students at the LSE (Student-Led Teaching Excellence Award) and Edinburgh Law School (Best Overall Teacher Award; Best LLM Supervisor).

My teaching philosophy is grounded in the belief that the student experience is enhanced by a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere, where room is made for interdisciplinary, cross-cultural, and experiential forms of learning.  I routinely use role-plays and simulations in academic settings, drawing on the training experience outlined above. Since 2020, I have been exploring new ways of teaching emotional intelligence in the conflict resolution classroom, incorporating sessions on active listening, empathy, curiosity, creativity, self-awareness and mindfulness in my teaching of LLM students. A starter guide I wrote on teaching emotional literacy can be found here.
